CZMAI to implement Goff's Caye Fee System on August 1st

Belize City, Belize, Tuesday, July 20, 2004 - - The Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute (CZMAI) will be implementing a US$10 entrance fee for all non-Belizean visitors to the Goff's Caye area effective Sunday, August 1 st , 2004. CZMAI will be holding a meeting on Monday, July 26, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the CZMAI Training Room on Princess Margaret Drive for all persons conducting business on Goff's Caye to discuss this new fee system and other important issues.

On Tuesday, July 6, the Minister of Natural Resources Hon. John Briceño and Mr. Hugh O'Brien, CEO, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and CEO of the CZM Authority Board of Directors, signed an agreement which allows for the management of the Goff's Caye area by the CZMAI. Under this agreement, CZMAI is permitted to implement management mechanisms involving use of the resources of Goff's Caye and the surrounding area. This agreement also permits the CZMAI to charge an entrance fee to Goff's Caye.

CZMAI will officially assume on the ground management on Sunday, August 1 st 2004, bringing into effect the new fee system. Issues to be discussed at Monday's meeting include the new concession fees, current improvements on the caye and long-term plans to ensure the sustainable use of the Goff's Caye area.
